Chapter Twenty

Frustrated, Rem returned to his car and sat, thinking about what Scott had told him. If everything he’d said was true, then he had to wonder where Daniels had gone. And if he hadn’t confronted Scott, then where did he go?

Rem knew Daniels had stopped at the Miller’s bed and breakfast to ask about Sonya who Scott supposedly called the night Sharon died. Gin had said, though, that the Millers would only talk to Sheriff Joe. Rem doubted the Millers would have any cause to hurt Daniels, so he didn’t feel a need to visit them.

His next option was either Rocky Whistler or the bank manager, Tyler Barnstone. The bank was closed, though, and Gin didn’t have an address for Tyler since he lived outside of Merrimac. She thought Rocky might know where he lived, but the barbershop was also closed on Sunday. Gin had provided Rocky’s address, though, and Rem started the car to head in that direction when his phone rang. He sighed when he saw it was his aunt and not Daniels. He answered, and Gin told him she’d gotten hold of Rocky, and he’d said he’d be at the barbershop to do some paperwork and Rem was welcome to stop by. Rem thanked her, pulled out of the lot and headed toward town.

Ten minutes later, he parked outside the barber shop and got out. He jogged up to the door and entered, seeing Rocky at the front desk, writing on a piece of paper. He looked up. “Detective. How are you?” He set the paper aside.

“Hi, Rocky,” said Rem. “I guess you remember me from Jimmy’s.”

“Remember you?” he asked. “You’re a hard man to forget. You bought me three drinks, along with everyone else at the bar.”

Rem sighed, feeling embarrassed. “Not one of my prouder moments.”

Rocky smiled and sat back. “It was one of mine. I had fun that night.” He chuckled. “You told some bawdy jokes.”

Sheepish, Rem shook his head. “I bet.”

“I’m glad to hear you’ve been cleared of any wrongdoing, though. I found it hard to believe you’d kill anyone, even Sharon.”

“I may make some stupid choices, but I’m not that stupid,” said Rem. He eyed the quiet shop. “I heard my partner, Detective Daniels, came in to see you yesterday.”

Rocky nodded. “He did. He was asking questions about Sharon and doing his damnedest to clear your name. He’s an intense man.”

“Yeah, well, when he’s on the trail of something, he won’t let up until he finds what he’s looking for.”

“I could see why some might find him intimidating. I bet he’s happy you’ve been released.”

Rem put his hands on his hips. “That’s just it. I can’t find him. That’s why I’m here. I know he talked to you yesterday. Any idea where he went after that?”

Rocky’s face fell. “You can’t find him?” He paused. “Did you talk to Scott Herndon?”

“He was my first stop, but Scott swears he didn’t see him.” Rem spotted the couch behind him and sat on the armrest.
